{Daily Moments} Baby Owls
Today was the kind of school day where Landon had barely made it to the end of his lesson when you could see the wheels turning in his head and he was starting to become the owl that we read about. As soon as the last sentence was read, he was off and building an owls nest with Ethan close on his heels. They built, fought, compromised and came up with a nest design that they were both happy with and proceeded to play out hatching as eggs, growing up, learning to fly and puffing up their wings to make predators think they were bigger and fiercer than they were. Once they were all played out, we continued our other subjects with the promise that when our school day was over, we'd go back and re-read the book on baby horned owls a second time.

{Daily Moments} The owl
Landon has always loved being an owl, a bird, a flying dragon, etc. We often see him flapping around the living room with his imaginary wings. One of his nicknames is "flappy bird".

Landon's Lego Birthday Party!
Landon, for your 5th birthday, you had a Lego themed party! You had both sets of your Grand Parents there as well as some of your best friends who you play with weekly.
We had lego tower ring toss, and had planned more games like relay races with legos balancing in spoons but you and your friends has so much fun just playing that we pretty much just stuck to that! At one point everyone was outside playing in the backyard together. You had a lot of fun.
Everyone got a small lego set and a package of Oreo's in their goody bag. Two of your favorite things.
Grammy was staying in town with us a couple weeks prior to your birthday and she made white chocolate lego pieces and lego men for your party!
The biggest hit of the party was the bowl of colorful skittles. You and your friends had fun camping out next to the skittles bowl.
You had so much fun kiddo! It was the perfect party for you! (And after the party, you took your 5 decoration and turned it into a number five shaped house)

Landon: 5 years old!

Landon,
Age five came and went and I didn't get around to finishing my journal entry on your current age. Thankfully, I had started a list of quotes from 4.5 to 5 and already had some pictures taken so I have some details for you. I'll post date this post, but it'll be a little less fleshed out since I can't add any new details since you've already changed so much again!
Some Recent Quotes:
-"Mom, maybe I'll get a pet spider. But not a poisonous one. I'll get a jar and poke holes in the lid and and put a piece of tape on the jar and write "itsy" to make his home. Then itsy will do the rest of the house instructions and make a spider web trampoline."
- "Mom, want to hear my true story? Landon NEVER is done building Legos. True story"
- “Puff did it!” Anytime you do something you don’t want to confess to doing, you blame it on Puff the Magic Dragon.
- "My brown and white eyes are great for hunting in the night" (hunting for his brother in the dark)
- Me: "Ok Landy-pie what cartoon"
Landon: "Did you just call me PIE? Well then I'm going to call you Vampire Cookies"
- Me: "Landon, what do you want to buy with your money?".
Landon: "uh, groceries. Bananas, yogurt, chocolate ice cream, and soap."
- "Why does that sign say no magic wands?" (pointing to a no smoking symbol)
- "Mom, why do you pet Cats? Is it to keep them from getting nightmares?"
- You call Merry-go-rounds "Dizzy Makers"
- One day at a homeschool co-op you plastered yourself against a rock column and pretended to be a ninja blending into the column while the Mom's talked.
--------
Landon, you love to make books and we have several different ones scattered around the house. You bring me your books without words and ask me to read them to you.
You are imaginative and full of stories. You recently told me that your old parents were squashed by a car and that you picked us out from the parent store. With your old parents you used to live in the attic. You also told me a story about how your other brother, "Gypsy Nugget", died. Your old brother from your old parents looked at the sun and the bright sun rays went into his mouth and burned his stomach. You also told me that we have an underground house under the concrete and we just have to find the trap door.
You talk about Puff the Magic Dragon all the time. Sometimes he's with you and he's your imaginary friend, but more often than not, you are looking for him or trying to call him to you. One day you pretended that you were in Sweden and found a magic passage to Puff the Magic Dragon who at the time was living in an ancient library in England.
Your brother loves the world of Harry Potter and you've picked up on parts of it by proxy. Scrapes and scabs are your "wizard marks" like Harry Potter and you love visiting the "magic world" when you play with your brother. One day we bought you a stuffed toy owl similar to your brother's toy owl and we set it on your bed with a pretend Hogwarts Letter. You were so excited that an owl had swooped into the house to bring you your own letter! You and your brother play with those owls almost daily.
Speaking of owls, you and your brother also like to pretend play that you are owls. One game you played was "Owl and Mouse" and you swooped after each other. One time mouse turned into a flying squirrel to get away.
You like to build "cat houses" and "cat stairs/but bridges" out of pillows. You do this DAILY. The cats don't use them but you enjoy building them regardless. You also build HQ's and tree houses when you are pretending to be an owl.

In some ways you are ahead of your age and in others you are behind. You are a dreamer and often get lost in your own world- sometimes in the middle of when you are supposed to be paying attention to someone else. It can be hard to get your attention but if we ask what you are thinking about you'll snap out of it and give a story about filling a building with duplos, building on a second story to the building you are in, or some other idea. You build way ahead of your age group with tiny legos and you build without having to rotate your project to match the instructions. You seem fine with mentally translating the instructions spatially.
One day when you were still 4, you and another 4 year old were making sandcastles in the sand table. While the other child was working on building above the sand level on the structure, you buried sideways test tubes under the sand below the castle you were making so that there would be "pipes" to bring water to the "sinks".
You were reading at a second grade reading level in August. You've begun reading longer chapter books and are doing very well.
You may seem older than 5 on some days but on others you definitely are my sweet five year old. I relish those moments when you are just FIVE and my baby. I love the sound of your bike training wheels on the pavement and how the sound mixes with how you like to hum the Harry Potter theme music or belt out the lyrics to Mr Rogers neighborhood while you ride your bicycle. It's so sweet and I really am in no rush for you to grow up- even if you are. :-)

Mudhodded Warriors

When you hear the words "Mom! Come look at our Mud Suits!" You know you have one of two choices. 1. Scold them for the mess and ruin the fun, or 2. Quickly grab the camera on your way outside.

You boys were so proud of your mud suits of armor. They give you +40 earth protection points against bees and wasps and UV. The mud globs on your ears are a sign that you are royalty.
You told me that you came through time from the Mudhodded Ages by using a mind-stone to rip the fabric of time. There was a long detailed backstory about living in the Mudhodded Ages. Landon was the "mud master" and inventor of the mud armor. His common name was "salt" but his secret name only special people could know was Landon.
The symbols (plants) on your chests help you to be able to go back in time and reach your own time and not end up in the wrong place.
Your fierce warrior face. Ethan, you were pretty good at staying in character and pretending you were a time traveler dazzled by your surroundings.
Boys, you keep it fun around here.
