Ethan: 8 years old!

Ethan,

At age 8, you are 49 inches (or 124 cm) and 55.6 pounds. This is significant because you are now over the weight limit for optimal results with an epi-pen jr and are in a grey area where you are not quite big enough for the full sized epi pen but prescribed it anyway. Hopefully we'll never have to use it. We recently discovered at an allergy follow-up that you likely have asthma. Your oxygens levels are fine, but we had you tested anyway because you've been having to use your inhaler several times a week or even nightly during this winter. They suspect small airway disease with environmental allergens as the suspect so we are likely going to be making several more allergist appointments in the coming months. You've been coping and hiding it very well so it was a bit of a surprise how low your lung function numbers were but with new medicine and some more follow-ups, environmental testing, re-testing for food, and possibly allergy shots in our future we'll get it under control. Eczema, food allergies, and asthma tend to go together so we aren't super surprised, just surprised that you probably needed preventative medicines before this point.

(quick update- it been 2 months since I started this and you are now 52 inches tall and 52.4 lbs)

You are such a people person and so opposite of me child. You read a persons name tag and say hello to them using their name before talking (no one taught you this) and when you were in the center of attention receiving noisy cheers you stood there proudly soaking it up for a moment and then thanked everyone for the cheering. (I would have been embarrassed as a kid).

You can be a little scattered when we ask you to do something. I've lost count of the times that you have come out of your room wearing both pjs and clothes after I sent you in to get changed for the day or the times you've discovered in the evening that you've been wearing two pairs of underwear all day or had your pjs on under your jeans. It amazes me that you don't discover it earlier!

We heard you talking in your room at 5 am so Daddy went in to investigate. You were talking away to Booskger as if he was one of us. You still love your Booksger and sleep with him nightly. You recently had another birthday party for Booksger and made him a birthday card and gave him a present (a bunch of pinecones that you found). You decided years ago that Booksgers favorite snack is pinecones.

Some recent Quotes:

- "I would like to collect different diseases in an air tight jar. I'd have to wear an astronaut suit so I could have my own clean air. Then we could take criminals to the punishment room and that would be the only time we open the jar. Depending on the severity of their crime depends on how bad the virus is. We'd decide what is appropriate: Deadly or a cold."

"Mom, I'm just PINING for Halloween! I have such a THIRST for Halloween!"

"I want to know more about this piece of my head" (Looking at the tooth you lost under a microscope)
"My tooth kind of looks like rock. Wait. It's made of calcium, and some rocks are made of calcium. Wow it's like I grow rocks in my head. I'm a rock making person."

"Mom, I'm going to need this olive oil to make a portal. (What??!!)...Oh and some Yttrium and a spark plug." (Why) "because I need to spark the right corner of the yttrium so it can be a superconductor"

- "Mom, where does Dad keep the lighter fluid?" (!!!!!)

Ethan was asking me about cloning today... "mom, why did they clone a sheep and not something like a duck?" Me "I don't know" E "oh! I know! Because it would probably be harder to get DNA from a duck and it might bite the scientist! It wouldn't bother a sheep. They are used to getting their hair cut and DNA is in hair!"

"What if it was possible to miniaturize a black hole? Do you think it could be kept in a jar if it was pressurized? Would it still be a black hole when you took it out of a jar? Do you think a black hole can ever go dormant like a volcano? What if it was possible to miniaturize a black hole and swallow it. What do you think it would do to a person's  insides? Probably rip them up I'm thinking, but what if, what IF there was a minuscule chance that it might give that person black hole super powers.... then they would have destructive.... DECONSTRUCTIVE super powers!"

- "I really wish I could have a little bitty pet black hole captured in a jar. Every day I'd feed it some rocks."

- "Have you ever wondered what it would be like to drive bubbles instead of cars?"

- (said to the nurse giving him a shot) " that was 4,000% less painful than I expected. If I ever have to get vaccines again, I hope you are the one to do them" "I'm glad that vaccines exist so I didn't have to die from a disease at 4 years old or something else like that"

"I love you mom, no matter what. Even when you get the name of dinosaurs wrong"

-  "How did Scrooge McDuck get so rich? He has so much non-digital money that he had to attach his bank to his house!"

"Mom, do you think I could build up a tolerance to dogs? Cause I kind of want a golden retriever....mom how do golden retrievers know how to find gold?"

"When I get married, I want to find a girl with the exact same personality and interests as me. Then after our kids go to sleep every night, we can stay up late and invent amazing inventions together!"

"Mom, I just love how every life has it's own unique story."

- "I can’t wait to have kids. I’m also enjoying my time of BEING a kid. When you play with me on the weekend Dad I can tell you have fun so I know I’m going to have fun with my kids. But I’m going to enjoy having my own kids even if I’m the boss of my own job. I’m going to have my own gemstone store and the kids will have to wear gloves so they don’t get fingerprints on the glass because they are going to want to touch them. And on Fridays, all the workers will get one gemstone each to symbolize each day of the workweek.”

“Let me put you on notice mom, when I say I don’t like something before I’ve tried it, I’m ALWAYS right.” (you ate it anyway)

- "I think I could discover how to invent an invisibility cloak if I could only study a sea sapphire...of my very own."

(6 am, climbs into our bed and says) “Mom, have you ever wondered just what’s out there ready to he explored?”

(He has two pairs of underwear with stars on them) "see these blue underwear with stars? These are my enchanted underwear. They can stop bullets. And these Orange enchanted underwear make me lighter than everything around me so that I can run faster and jump higher."

- (On finding a test tube in the freezer with his brother’s vomit and the dirt he vomited on inside)....."Well, you never know how the germs and the dna will react to the cold. Maybe they will go into hibernation or maybe they will turn into a super dirt!"

Little Stories

- one day Ethan's Halloween pining sent him over the edge. He climbed to the top of our swing set and from the top of the swim set, turned and yelled "it's almost October! It's almost October! It's almost October! To the four cardinal directions. From the top of his lungs.

“Say, Landon. Come sit here. I think no matter where we go we will be best friends. And I think we’ll always live in the same time period. Though I may die before you. Or at the same time. And one day, I’ll make you an Uncle.” Landon “what’s an Uncle? Oh well, then I’ll be a grand daddy”

- You and your brother love to throw on capes, grab toy wands, and pretend that ya'll are wearing wizard robes and are in the magic world. You just started Harry Potter number three and you and your brother pretended to follow a secret passage out of the castle to the village of Hogsmead and you wanted permission for some candy for Hogsmead. You love your stuff owl Harkey (and Landon loves Pecky) and you boys play almost daily with your owls. You don't always play magic world with them but you treat them like members of the family. (I saw both of you sharing your hot chocolate with your owls)

- Sometimes your imagination runs away with you at nightime. I had to tell you that cats eat monsters and since they are nocturnal and prowl the house at night you would be protected and could safely sleep. Once you invented monsters that cats couldn't handle you started sleeping with a toy wand by your bedside and you cast a "fidelis charm" so that the outside monsters couldn't find you. Booksger is your secret keeper and he'll never tell your location so you are safe. (Harry Potter plot point for going into hiding). You very much enjoy the Harry Potter Books (we recently let you read up to book 3) and you are currently reading the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" book.

- You like to make "Mud Geodes". Landon hides bits of chalk inside and then you break them open with a trowel to see what is inside.

- You call me "Mama Cat-Cat" and love to crawl into our bed first thing in the morning and talk. You pretend that you are a cat called Kidzy-cat.

You took swimming lessons this past summer and loved it! You said you finally  "drowned your fear in the pool" and that swimming feels like flying in water. You can't wait until swim lesson time again this year.

You are very sweet to your brother. At VBS you were given a lollipop every night as you were leaving. Instead of eating them yourself, you saved them to give to your brother every morning when he woke up. He was too young to go and was asleep when you got back but he was upset that he wasn't able to join you.

I found this in your room and had to ask... Only the strongest type of monster could pull it from the stone but that type of monster isn't in Heartland. You were protecting your wand at night so that the regular monsters wouldn't take it and use it against you. You use your wand to set protective bubble charms over our house to keep the monsters away at night and you have a monster lock on your door so that they can't access via the closet.  (And you very infrequently have monster problems. It only briefly happens every couple of months)

- (after listening to a radio ad for diamonds)...."I might want to get married but maybe not. Probably not for a long time. Cause I have a lot of things and plans I want to do and they are pretty specific and my wife might say NO. But when I do have a wife I'm going to buy her a diamond necklace with diamonds as big as my hand!". Me, "what kind of specific plans do you have?" E "well, I have rather a lot. I get a new one every day! It'll be hard for me to marry but when I do, it has a 59% chance of being Gabi."

- Mom! I saw that girl over by the car door and now I know what marriage is all about. I think she is probably 7. (you were 7.5 at the time)

- “Landon, we opened the LAST door on the advent calendar” “but I want more gummies tomorrow!” “ sorry Landon that’s not how it works, it counts TILL Christmas. “But I love them!” You can’t rewrite history”

Ethan on finding two tv antenna from our old rabbit ears "wow, are these really old fashioned?" Me "not really, they are from about 8 years ago" E "wow, people are evolving quickly with technology!"

- You drew a series of pictures that you call your "green hill" pictures. In these pictures you show a secret lair under a hill where guys on computers fight bad guys with remotely controlled lasers.

- You told me that you have 3 Types of energy. Halloween energy (that is charged up all year long),  Everyday energy, and excess energy. Halloween energy is the reason that you can keep on trick or treating the night away and don't need to go home to go sleep.

- You have been making big plans for an oyster farm. Reading up on how to raise them, and saving for the pieces of equipment that you think you will need. Your goal is to have pearls.

- “Landon, I think when you grow up one day, you’ll have a great job. You are great at your passions. You’ll be a great builder.” and also, “Landon, you have a great imagination. I love your ideas”. You love your brother and are so encouraging to him. You two really are the best of friends.

- Ethan, “Today is the best day, you know?” Me “why’s that?” Ethan “because I got to sit here and talk with my brother”.

- In Taekwando when you see me watching you turn back and smile or make a heart shape with your hands and look through it at me.

- You spend your evenings after bedtime reading books on the elements and periodic table by the light of your dumbledore wand. You are fascinated by dark matter and hope that you will be the one to discover more about it. You get so excited when you talk about it that you start jumping up and down.

- At the haircut place you are known as the "Little professor" and "30 year old stuck in an 8 year olds body" They always remember you and they will remind you of your last conversation and you'll pick back up with it and add more.

- We recently discovered that you can do multiplication. I knew that you had figured out the twos a while back but we had just finally gotten to multiplication in your math book and were about to start your first lesson when you went ahead and filled out your math worksheet on your own, BEFORE we started. When I asked how you knew how to do it, you told me that it was just "logical". You have gotten very good at quickly doing addition in your head and you use that to quickly figure out the multiplication. Now we are working on using multiplication in real life and during games for easily counting faster to help you memorize your  multiplication facts. We also are doing the lessons but you do find them a lot less interesting and have flown through two lessons a day.

- You helped rinsed Landon’s hair in the bath and then said that you were practicing for when you have kids...

I said “when you have kids?”
“Well in my third life”
“Your THIRD life??”
“...or fourth.”
“Why not until your third life?” (And where do you get this stuff, btw?)
“Because of all the stuff I want to do. I might not be home for a long time.”

One of your dreams at the moment, is to buy a humongous para-foil kite and sail away on a large gust of wind with just a pencil, a notebook, and a compass. You said that not being able to control the para-foil was the best part. No control over your adventure, just taking it as it comes and discovering all amazing things along the way. I brought up some harrowing scenarios that could come up involving mountains, oceans, etc but you weren't dissuaded. You said the challenges and not knowing ahead of time how to figure them out were the best part. Dear child with your head in the clouds, I hope that you revist this dream (theoretically) when you are older and draw the parallels to life and keep that optimism.

When you were five, you went around telling people that your full name was "Ethan Trilobite Moring".  You thought Trilobites were pretty neat and that it made a better sounding name. At age 8, I privately think that "Ethan Epic Moring" would suit you better. It's all "Go Big or Go Home" with you my dear. You remind me of the refrain from the Pokemon theme song "I want to be the very best, like no one ever was...." You are full of optimism and enthusiasm for all your endeavors (that are YOUR idea) and you see no reason why you shouldn't turn your plans into the stories of legends.

Happy 8th Birthday Son. (Although, its a tad late, and you are keeping a weekly tally of how many years, months, and weeks old you are). May your dreams and optimism take you far.

Ethan: 7.5 Years Old!

Ethan,

Somehow time got away from me and I didn't post the journal entry I wrote from when you turned 7....and then I added some new quotes between 7 and 7.5 and still didn't post it. I had wanted to find more photos of you but I think now its time to just go ahead and post what I wrote!

-----

At age 7, you are 48.75  inches tall ( cm) and 51 lbs. You wear size 120 cm, or size small (kids) clothing and size 12 shoes. You are on the line between clothing sizes however and are beginning to be able to wear some size Medium boys shirts and size 7 shorts although it'll be summer before you fit into them better.

Questions:

  • What brings you the most happiness? My birthday
  • When do you feel the most loved? When I get special treats and I know my parents care.
  • What are you afraid of? Dogs and Peanuts and other things I'm allergic to.
  • If you had one wish, what would you wish for? I would wish that I could do anything in the whole wide world.
  • What makes you mad? Times when my brother doesn't listen after I say something multiple times.
  • What is the meaning of love? Caring. The act and the feeling.
  • What is your name?  Ethan Garrett Moring
  • What is your favorite toy? Anything from Santa and special people who I don't see very often.
    - What is your favorite drink? Chocolate Milk
    - What is your favorite food? Smores, Milk and Cookies and Ice Cream.
    - What is your favorite thing to do outside? Play all sorts of different things.
    - What is your favorite thing to do with Mommy? Snuggle
    - What is your favorite thing to do with Daddy? Play all sorts of different things
    - What is your favorite animal? House Cat
    - What is your favorite song? All songs
    - What is your favorite number? 7. The age that I am at.
    - What do you want to be when you grow up? A great hero who saves the world.
    - Best friend: Gabi
    - Favorite color: All colors
    - Favorite cartoon: Pretty much every cartoon
    - Favorite holiday: All the holidays.

You are such an extrovert. And really this is nothing new but it is amazing to me how many times we've heard strangers say "Bye Ethan!". At the butterfly garden we arrived and you ran ahead of us to talk to the front desk and ask for a butterfly identification chart all on your own and your own idea. Later you ran up to a worker and started asking questions and they led you around and helped you find the butterfly you were looking for and showed you the eggs on a plant and answered your questions. Everywhere we go it seems that there is someone who remembers you and your name.

In the Spring, during the first half of your 6th year, you were enamored with Trilobites. You thought they were so neat, that you wanted your middle name to be Trilobite. You went around telling people that your name was Ethan Trilobite Moring, and even had a couple friends believing it.

You have penpals and best friends outside the family but you and Landon are truly very close. You play together off and on all day and have wonderful adventures together. You are almost always ready to join in and play with Landon when he asks. You both love playing outside and especially in the backyard at night when the weather is mild. The two of you dream up all sorts of worlds and continue the same imaginative world for weeks at a time. Last Halloween y'all would take the light sabers outside and light up your play climbing structure and call it "scary house". You've also been pretending that you are a night elf that can change into a bear and protect and defend Landon. And most recently the two of you have been playing Time Machine. Y'all climb up on the circle swing and the direction the swing turns is the direction that you are turning back the clock. Y'all have so many games ya'll play. You play as ninjas with a secret headquarters where y'all sneak around the house and try not to be seen. Y'all play Harry Potter's magic world and use play wands to summon chocolate from the pantry. Y'all also build forts in the living room and pretend to be owls/mice/or an owl hunting your brother who is a mouse. You also play that you are a fanciful flying cat that hatches from an egg.

As for questions, you've dialed back a lot of your questions but when you do, you want them answered very detailed. Human body questions about saliva and digestion eventually lead us away from the kid geared videos and explanations because those aren't detailed enough to answer the questions in your mind.

One of your many invention ideas when you were at the end of age 6 was titled the "The cat feeder necessary to feed fish". You described it as a  series of tubes- one goes to the sea and they suck up fish and shoot them through the tube and they pop out and surprise the cat and the cats divvy them up.

Quotes:

"One day I'm going to make a fossil out of myself"

"Mom? Why was the Clifford the Big Red Dog so big? How did he get that way? I bet he has health problems."

"If a two headed snake doesn't live very long, would he live longer if one head was cut off?"

*sigh* when I get to heaven I'm going to have so many questions to ask God. First question will be "did Giants (humans) ever exist?"

About an hour after the kids went to bed we hear a noise and Ethan walks into our room "I just wanted to tell you...that did you know that honey bees do something really interesting? They tell each other where the pollen is by doing a little dance." Thanks for the cool fact Ethan. Now go back to bed!

"Mom, when you said 'Ethan Garrett Moring' (not sure when he is referring to) I didn't like that... I prefer Ethan TRILOBITE Moring."

"I want to get a Nobel prize... I know! I'll make Trilobites not extinct. I'll build a Time Machine! How? Well with God's help of course! God can do anything!"

"*gasp* I just found my pajama shorts on under my shorts! That's where they went! I was wondering why my clothes were so hot!"

Saw Landon's short chubby baby legs in a picture and said it kinda looked like Elephantiasis.

"Ohhh, thanks. You're the nicest mom I've ever had in my life."

"Oh that's just a weed seed mom. Don't drop it, it's like planting your own hate."

"Does a two headed snake have two brains? Which one tells it what to do?"

Ethan ran ahead to go catch Landon and they slipped in the mud. Then Ethan told me that he risked his life to save his most precious treasure. His brother.

"I really love my brother. He's so precious to me. There is nothing more precious than a brother. If you only have one brother you've got to take very good care of him! The older one HAS to look out for the younger. I'll always protect him! Even past the age of 10!"

"That spider could have bit Landon! And he could have died! No mom, ALL spiders ARE poisonous! There mouths just aren't all big enough to bite humans! We don't know how big that spiders mouth is. HEY- LANDON! I have an idea! Let's follow him and find his web! Then we can put up a security camera and watch him eat a fly or insect so we can see how big his mouth is!"

"(Sigh)....I wish Adam and Eve would have just obeyed God...."

"Mom, why do girls think hair is so important?"

Landon is fussing in the backseat and Ethan just sweetly told him "I know Landon, but sometimes life just doesn't go the way you expect it to."

"I really like Peter Rabbit because he's naughty- like me (said with a grin). He has to be told stuff not twice but thrice."

Pointing to a wilted blossom among newer blossoms, Ethan asks "don't you think this blossom looks weary?"

"Wow oh wow. I just don't know how to thank you! You answered one of my greatest questions!"

"You know Mom, my life is going to look different from how you want it to be"

"The friendship between me and Landon will last from the beginning of the earth to the end of the earth. Even in heaven! I bet God knew that and that's why he gave me Landon for my brother"

"Mom, if I yelled Happy Halloween underwater, how far would the sound travel? Since sound hits molecules and makes them move to travel and water is full of molecules would it go farther? What distance mom? And what would the fish do when they hear it?"

After your allergy test, the allergist measured the size of your wheals and wiped down your back with an aloe and anti-itch lotion. You smiled and said "ah! I feel most refreshed". Then you thanked the Allergist for being doing a great job at doing his job.

"Ugh! I just wish I knew how to make my invention! But not after years- now! As a kid! It'll be my life's work to change the world!"

(Detailing the differences between Cats and humans) "... and the last thing different is that they have the courage to bite the heads off of snakes and eat spiders."

"'Just milk' (as compared to Chocolate milk) is so yummy I would drink it from a straw, an open cup, or even a jug if I have to! I'm even thinking of getting a cow!"

"Are these the same dining chairs that we had at the old house? ....ah, such memories we've brought with us!"

"Good morning mom! I want to snuggle with you. You've never snuggled with a 7year old before!"

"On the weekdays I'm going to be a microbiologist, on the weekends a geologist, and on the holidays a Warrior"

"Hey mom. I'm going to need an orange seed-  no wait, a full orange, and a lightbulb. Don't worry, I'm just doing an experiment."

"Mom! Landon won't stop talking about carbon dioxide and it's getting annoying"

"Hey mom. Smell this putrid acorn."

"I had a dream that I had an enchanted piece of paper and when I drew on it, it turned 3D!"

"Aww mom, you are the nicest girl I've met. I'm so glad I met you the first moment I opened my eyes."

"Mom! Mom! Mom!" I get up and head to the bathroom wondering what's wrong and find Ethan peering at the mirror, "mom! I looked really closely at my irises and I saw my destiny!"

"See that bird over there? He told me a story. A story about the village that lives over there on top of that cloud. That's where the story of the world is written. Whatever they write comes true. I don't know if it's the quill they write with, the scroll that they use or if it's just the person who is writing. But whatever they write becomes true. The bad guys ride the wind and try to change the story."

"I stood on the chair looking out at the rising sun and I felt as if the future was depending on me, ME, to become an inventor!"

When your new bed arrived... "Booskger meet our new bed. See the orange lightning bolt sheets? Mom said we can pretend it's dragon fire."

"Mom, the lantern fest really opened up my interests. My real true interest is love and family and events."

"If a cat could drive, How many tickets do you think he'd get? Well, I think he'd get a few and he doesn't even have money!"

"If I took my clothes off do you think a magnet would stick to my chest since I have iron in my blood?"

"Do cats get wrinkles on their face when they get old?"

------

E "There's a force field keeping  my pencil lead from touching my paper! I can't do my work because the force field!"

Me "well, that's a problem. You are going to have to find a way to get rid of that force field if you want to earn Minecraft time"

E "Oh! Hey! I figured it out! If I use a magnet it turns off the force field!" (Finishes doing his handwriting assignment...)

E "how many pages for handwriting? 1 or 2?" "Two" (loud dramatic sigh) "I feel like I'm in a horror movie!"

-----

You love Pokemon and invented your own Crystal type Pokemon with a history of attacks and evolution and you kept track of everything you dreamt up. You and your friend Gabi dream up plans for the world wide adventure you are going to go on once you've invented a way to make Pokemon real. You said I could come along to cook for y'all.

You told me that in 11 years you will take care of me and teach me how to write again if I'm too old and forget.

After a long school break, rather than loosing ability, you seem to gain it. It's happened a couple times and it's funny because it was like you were learning my osmosis or something. I expected to have to reteach a little but the first week back is usually amazingly smooth. This time I decided to ask you about it to test my theory. I told you that I was surprised that you remembered so much and that your Math got much better after the break. You told me that you were afraid that you would forget something so you had to actually focus on your school. Yes. The difference was that you focused and tried. I try hard to keep school interesting and we skip a lot of the repetitive work but still, if I ask you to do the same type of Math problem more than a couple times you start to shut off. You keep me on my toes with school work.

One of your life goals is to discover an un-identified species of plant. Then you told me that really anything would work. Animal, microbe, etc. But you also want to be a warrior.

One night you were running around pretending to be a dragon. I heard you had a wheeze starting up so I said we needed to get your breathing medicine. You  told me you couldn't take it right now because then you wouldn't sound like a dragon anymore.

You still like to draw pictures of invention ideas. This one is a s'mores machine. That's a conveyor belt with a grabber to assemble and a hairdryer to heat the marshmallows and chocolate.

One of your stories you told me:

Have you ever noticed black or grey flowers? Those flowers have been pollinated by a "darkness bee". The darkness bees are very dangerous and if you are stung you will die. The white flowers are pollinated by lightness bees. But only white flowers have been pollinated by them, not the grey. If you are stung by a darkness bee, there is one small hope, If you can get a lightness bee to breath its breath on a paper towel and you hold it to you for two years you can be cured. You need to attach the towel to your foot with a shoe made from Lucite. If you take it off before two years, you will die in a nano-second. The darkness bees are around to try to harness the power of the darkness flowers and spread it. Thats why their bee stings are so deadly. There have been reports of boys all over my imagination-land being stung by darkness bees. Every day, 10 boys get stung. They are tricky because they like to hide in the dark where they are invisible. They use their darkness sting to disintegrate a hole into the wall of a house so that they can build their hives inside the walls of houses where they cannot be seen. It appears that the boys in my imagination-land are starting to become extinct. Girls are 1,000 percent immune to the stings of darkness bees.

(recently he was stung by a bee that he stepped on)

I wish I had more of your stories written down. You create detailed worlds with fanciful epic storylines. I hope you still like to tell stories once you have efficient enough typing skills to document and revise them. It's a little hard for me to keep up with them. When you have to hand write something you pair down your sentences to the shortest possible way to convey your meaning and you'll even count letters in a word and try to find a smaller word. Handwriting is your least favorite subject.

You love using your microscope to see things. You ask to pull it out all the time and look at all kinds of things.

You are so fun Ethan! You keep us entertained and I'm so glad I get to spend more time with you through homeschooling!

Landon: 5 years old!

Landon,

Age five came and went and I didn't get around to finishing my journal entry on your current age. Thankfully, I had started a list of quotes from 4.5 to 5 and already had some pictures taken so I have some details for you. I'll post date this post, but it'll be a little less fleshed out since I can't add any new details since you've already changed so much again!

Some Recent Quotes:

-"Mom, maybe I'll get a pet spider. But not a poisonous one. I'll get a jar and poke holes in the lid and and put a piece of tape on the jar and write "itsy" to make his home. Then itsy will do the rest of the house instructions and make a spider web trampoline."

"Mom, want to hear my true story? Landon NEVER is done building Legos. True story"

- “Puff did it!” Anytime you do something you don’t want to confess to doing, you blame it on Puff the Magic Dragon.

- "My brown and white eyes are great for hunting in the night" (hunting for his brother in the dark)

- Me: "Ok Landy-pie what cartoon"
Landon: "Did you just call me PIE? Well then I'm going to call you Vampire Cookies"

- Me: "Landon, what do you want to buy with your money?".
Landon: "uh, groceries. Bananas, yogurt, chocolate ice cream, and soap."

- "Why does that sign say no magic wands?" (pointing to a no smoking symbol)

- "Mom, why do you pet Cats? Is it to keep them from getting nightmares?"

- You call Merry-go-rounds "Dizzy Makers"

- One day at a homeschool co-op you plastered yourself against a rock column and pretended to be a ninja blending into the column while the Mom's talked.

--------

Landon, you love to make books and we have several different ones scattered around the house. You bring me your books without words and ask me to read them to you.

You are imaginative and full of stories. You recently told me that your old parents were squashed by a car and that you picked us out from the parent store. With your old parents you used to live in the attic. You also told me a story about how your other brother, "Gypsy Nugget", died. Your old brother from your old parents looked at the sun and the bright sun rays went into his mouth and burned his stomach. You also told me that we have an underground house under the concrete and we just have to find the trap door.

You talk about Puff the Magic Dragon all the time. Sometimes he's with you and he's your imaginary friend, but more often than not, you are looking for him or trying to call him to you. One day you pretended that you were in Sweden and found a magic passage to Puff the Magic Dragon who at the time was living in an ancient library in England.

Your brother loves the world of Harry Potter and you've picked up on parts of it by proxy. Scrapes and scabs are your "wizard marks" like Harry Potter and you love visiting the "magic world" when you play with your brother. One day we bought you a stuffed toy owl similar to your brother's toy owl and we set it on your bed with a pretend Hogwarts Letter. You were so excited that an owl had swooped into the house to bring you your own letter! You and your brother play with those owls almost daily.

Speaking of owls, you and your brother also like to pretend play that you are owls. One game you played was "Owl and Mouse" and you swooped after each other. One time mouse turned into a flying squirrel to get away.

You like to build "cat houses" and "cat stairs/but bridges" out of pillows. You do this DAILY. The cats don't use them but you enjoy building them regardless. You also build HQ's and tree houses when you are pretending to be an owl.

In some ways you are ahead of your age and in others you are behind. You are a dreamer and often get lost in your own world- sometimes in the middle of when you are supposed to be paying attention to someone else. It can be hard to get your attention but if we ask what you are thinking about you'll snap out of it and give a story about filling a building with duplos, building on a second story to the building you are in, or some other idea. You build way ahead of your age group with tiny legos and you build without having to rotate your project to match the instructions. You seem fine with mentally translating the instructions spatially.

One day when you were still 4, you and another 4 year old were making sandcastles in the sand table. While the other child was working on building above the sand level on the structure, you buried sideways test tubes under the sand below the castle you were making so that there would be "pipes" to bring water to the "sinks".

You were reading at a second grade reading level in August. You've begun reading longer chapter books and are doing very well.

You may seem older than 5 on some days but on others you definitely are my sweet five year old. I relish those moments when you are just FIVE and my baby. I love the sound of your bike training wheels on the pavement and how the sound mixes with how you like to hum the Harry Potter theme music or belt out the lyrics to Mr Rogers neighborhood while you ride your bicycle. It's so sweet and I really am in no rush for you to grow up- even if you are. :-)

Landon: 4.5 Years Old

Landon,

At 4.5 years old you are 41 lbs and 42 inches tall. You've been going through a high frustration phase where your body and your fine motor skills can't keep up with what you envision in your head. In so many ways you seem so much older than 4. In other ways, you seem behind other 4 year olds and in others you seem way ahead. You are a precocious little package of contrariness and joy. We wouldn't have you any other way and you add so much to our family. You are your own unique person!

Quotes:

- "I don't like to go to bed! But I'm too busy for bedtime!"

- You call the electrical boxes "Lightning Monster Cages"

"I'm going to name my two cats 'sandwich' and 'hopscotch'"

Me, "Landon, it's time to take off your pajamas and put them in the dirty clothes and put on clean clothes"  Landon, "But my pajamas are clean! They aren't muddy yet!"

- (Tears after loosing privileges and being reminded that he still lost privileges) "I was foolish!..."

- "Hi Rolley Polley!  Sorry I can't play today, I have to ride bikes today. Bye Rolly Polly!"

- "Mom, this book says 'Harry Potter'. Can you read me a passage from this book?"

- "Mom, does water dry? (Talking about a spill) Well then why does the pool still have water?"

- "Mom, why was I not born with wings?"

- "I want to get cozy." (Sleepy from taking a nap in the car.)

- "Why are beds like cars? Because they drive you to morning-land!"

You told your Daddy that you wanted pajamas with gorillas on them.  When he asked you why, you said , "because. It's so ridiculous."

- (pointing at some large pieces of dried mud)... "Look! It's Weil-wee food!" (You also call dried mud that you can crumble "weil-wee treats".

-  "What is ... and what does it do? What is a red blood cell and what does it do? What is the small intestine and what does it do? Why is (piece of lint) and what does it do?"

Overheard Landon in the backseat ... "there is no nightmare (creature), monsters, war, or squash bugs in Heartland"

"PUFF the MAGIC DRAGON, Loves his friend LANDON ðŸŽ¶
(A little backstory about Puff. While on a walk, you stopped a man in his garage to ask him if he had seen a magic dragon anywhere. Then you went off looking saying that the dragon was looking for your Neighborhood. The rest of the afternoon you played in the backyard with your pretend friend. You told us that your Magic Dragon can do anything and will make our backyard clean and the playroom clean.)

------------------------------------------------------------------

You love the city. You talk about it all the time and are very excited whenever we need to drive in or past it!

Your favorite animal is an eagle and when you are twenty you are going to be a house builder and have a two headed dog named Mars.

On most days, you want to be a construction worker and build houses. Sometimes you want to be a mailman and deliver all the letters, and other days you want to be a police man with a siren on your car.

For a while your bike was named Rhino. Another day it was a horse and another day it shot rainbows. Currently its name is Lightning.

On your own, you went through the early reader cabinet, grabbed a few and sat down and read 4 beginner books back to back. When you were finished, I said "yay Landon! Wow, you learned to read today!" You just looked at me and said "but I already know how to read". And the thing is you're right. A friend caught you sounding out and blending words on her wall when you were just a couple months shy of three and ever since then we've suspected that you could read. Still, this was a first for us because you acknowledged it and decided to start reading openly and out loud with us. And once you decided to read to us, you started reading outloud in 20 minute chunks of time (you start to get pretty silly after that.) You sit still for reading a lot longer than I expected for a boy your age and you can already read the literature books that we are supposed to read together during your Kindergarten curriculum. We've started working on trying to correct some of the words that you mispronounce from learning to read on your own (like find, You say it FINd) but you are reading pretty fluently and are reading longer words like "together".

You get pretty creative and like to make your toys. You'll mix and match things you find to create what you need. You are just as happy to play with two lego blocks as your "people" as you are to play with actual action figures. You'll also seek out paper and tape and make things. You aren't too fussy if they don't turn out perfectly either.

One day you were doing art, and drawing different dinosaurs. Out of the blue, you grabbed the scissors, called them "sharp tooth" and had "sharp tooth" attack one of your dinosaur drawings. Then you attacked another drawing and said ""I'm going to eat your friend!". When you were done, you rummaged through the office drawer for our other scissors to get "Sharp tooth's daddy and family". Basically art dissolved into you playing with scissors.

On the night we switched your toddler bed to your big boy bed you told us that you were happy but a little disappointed. I asked why and you said it was because you didn't "fit the bed right" and showed us how far away your toes were from the end.

You are still fascinated with the human body and with the cat's body. The other day I saw your watching the cat and you started to talk about Bailey and Bailey's "Cat Human Body" and where all the parts of his body where. As the cat got annoyed and got up to walk off you started narrating how his muscles worked to move his bones and how his shoulder blades are made to float in his body so that Cat can squeeze into small places. You continued to narrate the cat anatomy facts that you had picked up from watching a documentary with your brother to describe everything you saw the cat doing.

You like to make models of things. For weeks you were making rough models of the heart pumping blood and just recently you have started to move on from the human body to the water system. You made a diagram with toys and train tracks of a water tower and pipes bringing water to a house sink. Your heart "model" an empty bubble container and smaller bubble tube stuck in the top. You would squeeze the bottle to make the liquid go up and into the tube which you called the "blood stream".

You've started doing math on your own and are moving faster than I realize. One day Ethan barged into the bathroom to tell me that you were writing math equations on the chalkboard. Your brother said "mom, Landon did Math all by himself on the chalkboard. He wrote 3+2=5 and that's actually real math! he wrote very nice numbers for a beginner." I also noticed you diagramming subtraction and addition families on the patio in chalk and also counting the produce we harvested from our garden. You counted the peppers, and then the tomatoes and then you added them up to the total daily harvest number. Later when I was cooking you walked by and recounted and then subtracted and told me what I had used up. You are now counting and doing math up to 20 and I haven't even taught you math yet.

Speaking of being self-taught, you have started to write as well. I told you that your friend Stevie was coming over to play and found this sign that you made and put on your door. You were worried that Stevie would come into your room and knock down your 200 piece Magna-tile "Hogwarts castle"

You love your brother so much. The week that Ethan had evening VBS you were very distraught. When we went to drop him off you were convinced he was being left forever and was no longer going to be a member of our family and would be adopted at VBS. You were so worried about him and worried he would be lonely that you didn't want to leave him at first.

You love to paint. In this painting you made a house with black smoke, an underground tunnel, and a pet cage attached to the house. Lava is coming and the sun is shining. Then you added a black rainbow, some orange lightning and black rain and the shadow of a cowboy chasing a bandit that was trying to steal all the Christmas stuff from the house.

Realistic looking Apple with a shadow. All your idea. I had no idea what you wanted to paint when you asked me for the paints and you made it from your imagination. I've noticed that you've started adding shadows into your art. (and since you love looking at light and shadows I guess I shouldn't be suprised!)

I wish I could somehow document and remember your vivid imagination and how wild and crazy the ideas are that I hear when you are playing. Thing is, you'll play on your own for hours (but you love playing with Ethan as well) I usually don't know what is going on in your head unless you are playing with Ethan. Sometimes I wonder if I ever had that type of imagination- was it lost in growing up? Non-existent to begin with? You probably get it from your Dad or maybe it's all just YOU. You build complex worlds when you play- and they usually have nothing to do with the type of toys you've stacked, turned upside or backwards. You still prefer to play with just your hands when you play alone and your characters are "Weil-wee and fly".

You are growing up so fast Landon Robert! I can't wait to see what age 5 will hold. If its anything like age 4 its going to be an entertaining whirlwind!
