Lantern Fest 2017

On March 4th we went to the Dallas Lantern Festival. The forecast changed on the morning of the event and our beautiful weather turned cold and drizzly. Since it was just drizzly off and on all day instead of a true rain the event continued on as planned. It was a little colder than we had prepared for but we didn't let that stop our fun! We went ahead as planned and enjoyed our tickets. Thankfully once the event was underway we had firewood for our firepits and that helped a lot with the cold!

Ethan was pretty mesmerized by the fire and alternated between dancing to the music that was playing and pretending that he could wave his hands and control the flames of the fire.

Landon was a little cold and subdued but for the most part just took it all in and perked up once we started roasting Smore's. Ethan had about 4 and Landon nibbled on one until he had eaten most of it and his graham cracker had gotten soggy from the drizzly rain. He wasn't ready to give up on finishing it though!

Once it got dark it started to get exciting. The music changed to more classical and epic sounding music and they started to give us instructions on how to light and release our paper lanterns. We had some trouble with ours since we had arrived early and our lanterns got a little too soggy before we found a way to cover them up and keep them dry. A lot of other people had similar issues but quite a few people managed to get their lit and airborne.

The kids took our lantern failure pretty well. Once the initial disappointment wore off, Ethan picked a lantern in the sky and called it "his" and watched it out of sight. Then he declared March 4th to be the best day of his life. And this was even taking into account that we had been sitting in cold drizzly rain for over 3 hours.

It was pretty incredible when all the lanterns started being released. The feeling of being surrounded by all the pretty white glowing lights as they rose was really hard to capture and just had to be experienced. Since several families had to share each fire pit everyone released their lanterns at different moments so the lanterns lifted off at different times which prolonged the release and made it even more special.

Landon was jumping up and down with excitement and I had to keep a close eye on him to keep him from darting around in the crowd. He was completely enchanted and when we left he said "all the lanterns are mine and I want them back."

It was definitely a night to remember and I'm glad we stuck it out despite the weather. We definitely want to try it again next year when it comes to town! As fun as it was I bet it would be even more incredible with better weather and more successful lanterns in the sky! (we had 3 that failed). Still, we enjoyed it immensely and it was a success in our eyes!  Ethan said it helped him discover his real true destiny which was "Love, Family, and Events".

And a couple of phone pictures from when we were waiting for it to get dark! One of the families sitting with us was from Houston and another family was from North Dallas and also were Aggies!

Ethan's 7th Birthday Party: Minecraft!

I don't have a lot of pictures from the party because I forgot to clear my camera memory card and ran out of space- oops!
