Don't stop till you drop
Even though you have been
doing fantastic in your new bed (and even put yourself down for a nap twice) there have been a couple of days when you just weren't ready to stop playing
and go to sleep. You are very quiet when you get out of bed but I can
see on the monitor that your bed is empty. This day I couldn't keep you
in bed even after multiple attempts to sing to you and tuck you in so I
let you do your thing in your room for a while. I eventually went in to
check on you and this is what I found.

Toddler Bed!
The week before Easter we decided to transition you to your new toddler bed. The crib converts but I wasn't too sure how well the transition would go or if you would be ready for it so we wanted to leave it in crib mode as a backup. Plus your new sibling will be sleeping in it in a few months (or maybe many more months after that if he or she takes after their big brother!) and we didn't want to confuse things by letting it remain your bed for too much longer. You were fascinated with watching me put it together and wanted to take turns with the screw driver and you "helped" me put the screws in and screw the bed together. You were so excited to see it coming together and couldn't wait to get in it.

Once it was mostly together you laid on it and pretended to go to sleep. After we finished it and put it in place we practiced putting puppy to sleep in the bed, covering him with your blanket, and singing "soft kitty" (your nighttime song) to him. Then we made snoring noises for him. You had fun with this game and practiced it several times and seemed to "get it".
Once nighttime arrived you did really well. In the first three hours you only got up twice. The first time we met you halfway across your room and walked you back to your bed. The second time you were crying because you lost your pacifier but you stayed in your bed. We kept your video monitor with us and watched it carefully for those first few hours to make sure that you were staying in bed. I felt a little bit like a security guard but it really wasn't necessary because you did very well.

After those first three hours you stayed down the entire night and only woke up 20 minutes earlier than normal. Your Dad slept soundly your first night too but I woke up so many times that I lost count. Every little noise had me up and checking your monitor to make sure that you were alright. When you woke up though you were extremely happy and dancing around your room. Ever since the transition you have gone from waking up cranky (in the crib) to waking up happy. You love your new independence!
Your second night you fell out of your bed and learned that you needed to sleep with your head near the top of the bed so the bed rails would hold you in. You've done great ever since.
Your first nap went a little less smoothly because it only lasted half as long as your crib naps. However when you got out of bed you put yourself back in your bed and went to sleep. Since then nap time has varied. Sometimes you stay asleep the entire 3 hours and sometimes only 1 hour. But you usually do well and go right down and stay in your bed.
And the best part of having a big boy bed....
It didn't take you long to figure this out at all! (It's the same mattress from your crib, yet you never tried this in the crib!)
All in all I worried way too much about the transition and you were ready to make the switch! Next up on our to-do list is getting your new big boy room ready so that we can move your toddler bed in!

Quarterly update: 27 months!
You are now 27 months old and its time for a quarterly update!
At 27 months you:
weigh: 28.4 lbs
wear size 24 month/2T clothing and size 6 shoes
Are wearing cloth diapers. We switched in February once we started thinking about having two kids in diapers come September. For all we know you might decide to potty train before then but we don't want to rush you before you are ready. You have gotten used to wearing the cloth diapers but at first you didn't like them and you wanted to wear a disposable. You can feel when you are wet in the cloth diapers and you didn't like this! (and yes, you have two hot pink diapers. Mommy goofed and put in the wrong color code at checkout.)

Despite several baths a week, your ghost bear smells like dirty socks. In fact his smell can get so strong that we can smell if Ghost Bear is nearby even if we can't see him. With my super strong Mommy nose I can smell if he used to be somewhere or if you have been snuggling him you have his smell in your hair. You love his smell. (It makes me gag.) You like to gnaw on ghost bear's arms. I don't think his stitching was meant to withstand that but so far he is holding together even if he does look a little worse for the wear.
You have discovered your pockets and like to fill them with acorn tops. I have been finding a lot of acorn tops in the dryer lately.
You like to fly your helicopter puzzle piece while making flying sounds. You are also really into airplanes, both toy and real on es. Your toy cars fly as well.
You have started feeding, hugging, and kissing your stuffed animals. You are so sweet with them!
You love wearing Mommy and Daddy's shoes! Usually you find Mommy's though because Dad is much better about putting his away when he's done wearing them.
You are doing so well at following directions (when it suits you of course!) If we ask you where the moon is you look around and then point to it. Also if we ask you to take off your shoes you will sit down and do it. Same goes for throwing trash in the trash can.
We have been re-introducing wheat starting with saltine crackers. We've had much better results this time around and you are doing well with it. However, you decided that you love saltines very much and you think that they should be their own food group.
Food has always been a struggle with you but lately you have taken it to a whole new (extreme) level. You have been slowly eliminating foods that you once loved and now we are down to 5 different food items (yogurt, saltines, popcorn, soft pretzels and veggie straws) plus milk that you will happily eat. This means we have a lot of unhappiness going on in the house but Mom is trying so hard to help making eating fun. I have read tons, and we have tried tons of different things but we are still seeking out a solution that will work. Most of the battle is that you don't want to try new foods and you no longer are interested in the foods you used to eat (broccoli, chicken, sweet potato, pear/squash "applesauce", bananas, toast). When you see a new (or unapproved) food item you scream/cry and run away from it. If you are in your highchair you try your best to hang over the edge to avoid food. When we put out a try of food to graze on you dump it on the floor. Every once in a blue moon you will want to eat something we are eating. Last time this happened it was pizza. This has happened twice. Before that it was broccoli a few months ago. We are back to limiting your milk to 1- 1.5 sippy cups a day so that you don't fill up on it. When we give it to you we add carnation instant breakfast to it.** In the last few days you have finally started to open back up again to food. You have eaten macaroni, bananas, fruit leather, toast and juice. Oh, and you licked a strawberry. It's a small win but I'll take it! **
Like most 2 year olds, you have a flare for the dramatic. ;-)
I recently took you to the park to feed the ducks. It was your first time feeding them and once you figured out that the bread was for them and not you (you wouldn't eat it, you just handed it back to me like you were saying "no thanks!") you had a lot of fun! You would throw the bread and say "throw!" and then when the ducks gobbled up the bread you laughed. It started off as a quiet little laugh and then each time you threw the bread again you would laugh harder and harder letting out big belly laughs at the ducks. It was super cute and you had so much fun.
We've had some issues with hives lately and we aren't sure what it is you are allergic to. Our best guess at the moment is that it is something environmental due to spring.
You like the "Itsy bitsy spider" and like to play it with us. It always makes me smile when I'm holding you and you start walking your fingers over my head.
You love bubbles and you could play with them forever.
You have been talking a lot lately! Your new words include:
do
blue
clue
monkey (sounds like wonkey)
Woah! (when he turns in circles)
"Way to Go!"
water
light
house
"What's this?"
" I see"
" I stack" (stacking blocks. "stack" is an old word)
ball
"He has ball" (giving me a plastic seal holding a ball)
throw
jump
door
"I got it!"
Choo Choo (he has discovered Thomas the Tank Engine and gets excited whenever he sees Thomas stuff anywhere. lol.)
Bubbles (Bubbly)
Pop
Bubbly, bubbly bubbly! Pop! Pop! I blewed it!
You have made up a new game in the car! On our last road trip you discovered it was more fun to throw your sippy cup, ball, train, snack cup, etc over you head so that it bounces off the dashboard at us instead of holding it over your head and waiting for us to take it from you like you have done for months. No more asking nicely, you enjoy throwing it and like to roar like a dinosaur as you lobby stuff at us from the back seat. Funny? Yes. Distracting? Also, yes. Let's hope this is a short lived game! My stern voice/threats to turn around the car aren't cutting it. (and yes, I know you are a little too young to understand but I tried anyway).
Little boy, you have been doing so well with your words and we couldn't be more pleased with your progress! You have stopped being a perfectionist on words and often times after the first few times you say them they become less precise. You seem happy to learn words now though and try to repeat them when we say them. We are thrilled! So far the age of two has been incredibly sweet, fun, extreme, and trying but rewarding. You surprise us every day!

Lens baby: Tea Party
On Monday we met up with our lens baby playgroup. I brought pinwheels, blocks and Ethan's wooden truck convinced that he'd be more interested in those toys than in the tea party setup but I was wrong. As soon as we arrived he ran and sat down at our friend's antique table and started pouring himself "tea". Who says tea parties are just for girls?!
A year ago we came to this same park for a tea party play date. Here is a picture comparison of Ethan and his friend who is only 1 day younger than him.
Oh, how fast they grow!

How my 2 year old feels about Easter clothes
Direct quote: "Help me! Help me!". I was dressing him up for a tea party themed photo shoot. We went casual instead. :-)

Because it makes me smile...
From a technical standpoint this photo has so many things wrong with it. But as his Mommy, I'm completely in love with it!

{roses or "rowes"}
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Ethan recently added the word "roses" to his vocabulary and will point to the roses outside if you ask him where the roses are. Garrett weeded and pruned the rose bed yesterday and brought these beauties in for me to enjoy. (Isn't he sweet?) We've had a lot of blooms in the past week and I have been enjoying having fresh flowers in the house!
