Canvas for a Cause: 2011

This painting is Garrett's 2011 entry for "Canvas for a Cause". It's an annual charity event hosted by his employer, Reel FX, that auctions off 10x10 canvasses painted by the creative folks that work there. Each painting has a price tag of $60, all of which is donated to the Dallas Children's Medical Center.

Despite being in "crunch time" at work and working 15 hr days (and Saturdays!), Garrett managed to pull this off the night before it was due (in true Garrett fashion) keeping him up to 3am!

Here is Garrett's entry from last year, which was also completed the night before it was due. ;-)

If you're in the Dallas area this time next year, you should definitely come to this event and check out some really great artwork!

{Just Because}

Playing on a box makes the toys so much more fun! I was picking up the toys in the floor of his closet and turned around to see him sitting on a box playing. I thought he was playing quietly on the floor behind me.

A little reflection...

The top two images are from when he was 7 months old and in the bottom two he is 18 months old.

Ethan recently discovered my makeup mirror when I took it off the counter to clean it. Needless to say its all smudged again now. ;-) I don't think I've had a clean mirror since he first discovered them. But I don't really mind. :-)

Ghost Bear Scare

Recently we had a "missing Ghost Bear" scare.

We thought you had lost Ghost Bear at Church. You were crying hysterically when we dropped you off at the Church nursery and the only way we could leave you was to bring Ghost Bear in from the car. We went home briefly and realized that we were missing Ghost Bear.

We searched but couldn't find him and then we realized that neither of us remembered seeing you with him when we came home from Church. We went back and looked for him and made calls to the people who were working the nursery that day and we still couldn't find him. We figured that maybe you had had him and dropped him in the hallway or parking lot or that maybe another kid had mistakenly ended up with him in their bag.

We had to stop looking to go to a birthday party for my grandmother and when we got back we tore the house apart looking for him just in case. We even looked in the toilets. We took turns holding and comforting you while the other one looked everywhere. We both triple checked the house. You cried for hours. Huge boo-hoo sobbing cries. We felt like a close friend had died. I cried with you as your mourned the lost of your precious friend.

We made the mistake of offering up Ghost Bear #2. You temporarily stopped crying until you smelled the replacement and then your cries turned to upset shrieks. We took turns wearing #2 in our shirts to try to give him our smell. I was even at the point that I was seriously considering chewing on Ghost Bear like you do just to help break him in. In the end though we had to put him away because you would throw him and then later see him on the floor and mistake him for your real Ghost Bear and then the sobs would intensify.

It was a long hard night. The day part wasn't too great either.

When we were at my grandmother's party you saw my cousin's little girl and her blue ghost bear lovey. You lunged for it and tried to grab it from her (even though the color was different...you were desperate). At one point she handed it to you and you smelled it but it wasn't right and of course you were upset.

The Ghost Bear story ends well though! You were only missing him for one day/night. I found him by accident, in the dark, when the light from the window glinted just right on his silky lining and I realized that he was sandwiched between your bibs under your high chair tray.Since Ghost Bear matches the off-white of the highchair tray and the lining of your bibs is off-white he somehow went un-noticed. Not sure when you put him there but I'm so thankful that we found him!

Even though keeping up with Ghost Bear can be stressful, I'm so glad that you are friends. I will be sad when the day comes that you no longer need Ghost Bear.

{Flowers with Love}

Last week Garrett suprised me with these pink calla lillies. They are so bright and cheerful that I just couldn't resist playing with heart shaped bokeh. They are beautiful. Thanks again, Hubby! <3

Someone has...

learned how to climb on the chair and he's very proud of himself!

18 Months

Height: 32.5 inches (60th percentile)
Weight: 25.2 lbs (40th percentile). That is the weight for Ethan+Ghost Bear. He wouldn't give him up.
Head circumference:49.3 (85th percentile)

- You are wearing mostly size 18 month clothing along with a few size 24 month one-pieces. However most of your size 18 month onesies still fit great! Some of your size 18 month t-shirts are still too big so I find it funny that you can wear a few things in size 24 month.

- In PJ's you are wearing size 18 month and the one-piece PJ's are getting snug. However you can't even walk in size 24 month one-piece PJ's. You are able to wear size 24 month two-piece PJ's even though they are definitely big.

- You wear size 4 diapers and size 4 shoes. Hats you wear size 18-24 month and they fit great but won't for  too much longer. You have always been one size larger with hats!

- Sleep: You are still pretty good with it but this past month you have been going to bed later and getting up earlier. Also, the lengths of your naps have been more erratic. You usually go to bed around 7:30 now and wake up between 5:30 and 6:30 AM. Recently you tried switching your wake up time to 4:30 AM. Instead of your 3 hour naps they have been ranging between 30 minutes and 2.5 hours. Typically around 45 minutes to 1.5 hours though. You start to get tired around 9:30 AM and resist your nap until around 1 PM.

- You can climb up on the couch all by yourself, no one sitting on it and nothing to stand on. You have been perfecting this skill all month and you used to have to have someone sitting there that you could use for leverage. (Not that we encouraged this...but we would cuddle on the couch with you) The first time I turned around and saw you sitting on the couch by yourself you scared me so bad!

- While we were on vacation you started quacking like a duck anytime we went into a parking garage. Now that we are home, you have continued the trend but only when we are in our garage. Doesn't echo the same but you still do it!

- You consistently stack up to 7 cups/objects. You love to stack everything! I even saw you trying to stack your Chex cereal pieces.

- You love to put toys on your head. Or on our heads. Though you aren't too gentle with placing it when it's on our heads! You think this is such a funny game and you try hard to balance it as long as you can. You prefer when we put it on your head for you because you can balance it much longer.

- In case I haven't mentioned it before, you love to chew on Ghost Bear.

And not just when you are going to sleep.

You have taken to carrying him in your mouth so that you have both hands free to play and don't have to set him down.

He goes everywhere with you. I think you are even more attached if that is possible.

- You are no longer squeamish about touching slimy foods with your hands. You pick up and eat chunks of banana when you get tired of trying to use the fork. You love to smoosh cooked carrots but you don't eat them. However if 15 minutes later I offer you purred carrots you will eat them. I bet carrots are the next thing that you give in on. ;-)  (side note: since I started writing this post, Ethan has eaten diced cooked carrots. Once)

-You ate guacamole and also Chex cereal dipped in hummus. And yet you are so picky about some of the basic foods that most kids love! Funny boy. :-)

- You  love to play in the curtains and go into the closet and play in the fabric of momma's dresses. You like to wrap the fabric around you because its cool and soft.

- This isn't new, but when you run you put your arms out behind you and lean forward . In my mind, I think you are doing this to make yourself  "run faster".

- My other theory is that you are doing it all the time now because the penguin on Pingu (a show you like to watch) runs likes this. You also have been pursing your lips more and saying "snoo snoo" which is what the penguin does on Pingu.

- You still love to turn in circles until you get dizzy. You look out of the corner of your eyes when you do it. I tried it and I can see why you do it- it makes you even dizzier! Silly kid! You have gotten quite good at keeping your balance when you turn circles though!

- You love to play in the bathtub-with or without water! If you are extra cranky its a proven mood lifter!

- You love to hear how sounds change. You like to talk into cups or put your hand over your mouth when you talk to hear how your voice changes. You also like to put things on your ears to hear the difference in the sound. In this photo you are wearing the two half's of an Easter egg over your ears.

- You aren't always the most cooperative on group activities. ;-) I thought it was funny that when I went to pick you up from Sunday school you were the only child who didn't have 20 hand prints all over your paper.

- You still aren't very verbal but when Kalyn and the girls came to visit us you started saying "Mama" again. I guess it took some jealousy and seeing your mother hold someone else's baby to give you a good reason to say my name! I can see you taking in what we are saying but you don't show the desire to repeat it back. I guess this is just a sign that you'll talk when you are good and ready.

Happy half-birthday, Ethan Garrett! We love you!

Aunt Morgan

A few days after Aunt KK left, Aunt Morgan arrived for a visit!

She and Ethan played piano together...

Peek-a-boo...

And she taught him how to type.

And lets not forget the Nintendo DS.

He almost beat his Aunt's high score. ;-) Well, he would have if he had kept the stylus on the lower screen.

We also went to H-Mart (Japanese/Korean grocery store) so that Aunt Morgan could stock up on spices and ingredients for some of the reciepes she learned while she studied abroad in Japan.

(image taken by Morgan on her iPhone)

She even let you play with her loot afterwards. (Everything is stackable these days.)

We had a great time! Thanks again for coming to visit us!
